{"id":2752,"date":"2019-12-19T20:44:39","date_gmt":"2019-12-19T20:44:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/genus-develop.go-vip.co\/promar-de\/?p=2752"},"modified":"2020-05-19T16:05:15","modified_gmt":"2020-05-19T16:05:15","slug":"maintenance-of-soil-health-and-organic-matter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/de\/maintenance-of-soil-health-and-organic-matter\/","title":{"rendered":"Maintenance of soil health and organic matter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>By Andrew Hawkins<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\"><strong>This year 2019 has seen a very wet end to the summer and beginning of Autumn with many parts of the country experiencing twice or three times monthly rainfall figures in a matter of days.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many farms will have been challenged to avoid soil erosion and or damage to soils and the potential of these fields to deliver for the 2020 cropping year. This year has seen late-harvested maize or other forage crops grown for livestock where the lack of plant cover has increased the risk of soil erosion and nutrient residues from the previous crop being leached. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With\ncare and the correct choice of species and variety it can be possible to\nestablish over wintered cover or catch crops which can not only deal with the\nimmediate challenges of soil erosion and nutrient uptake but also improve\ndrainage and soil structure when establishing the next crop.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where\npossible the use of minimum cultivation and or basic soil repair methods should\nenable less soil disturbance, soil erosion and nutrient loss when establishing\nthe chosen crop which may be a mix of hybrid brassica or a grazing turnip or a\nforage rye variety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once\nestablished a choice could be made between either using this as a green manure\nor potentially grazing with sheep or youngstock, care would need to be taken in\nmanaging this to avoid surface poaching and capping of the soil whilst grazing.\nThe return of manure to the soils would be useful in converting the crop dry\nmatter into organic manure and soil organic matter increase for the next crop.\nThe benefit in soil structure and drainage would be significant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking\nahead the future choice of whole crop cereals and maize varieties to enable the\nopportunity to introduce cover and catch crops such as grazing turnips or\nbrassica mixes would give the manager more opportunities and enable timeliness\nof operations and can be established in September.&nbsp; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Andrew Hawkins This year 2019 has seen a very wet end to the summer and beginning of Autumn with many parts of the country experiencing twice or three times monthly rainfall figures in a matter of days.\u00a0\u00a0 Many farms will have been challenged to avoid soil erosion and or damage to soils and the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":231,"featured_media":2754,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[44,15],"tags":[],"abs_type":[7],"pro_group":[],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v18.1 (Yoast SEO v19.10) -
