livestock industry found itself back in the headlines in the back end of last year after an international report claimed to show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/2019\/08\/08\/land-is-a-critical-resource_srccl\/\">links to food production and our changing climate<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Published by the UN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change<\/a> (IPCC), the document demanded changes to farmland\nmanagement to reduce emissions of harmful greenhouse gases, and subsequently\nmitigate climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In particular, it suggests we\nneed more diverse farming systems \u2014 ones which incorporate sustainably-managed\npasture and livestock \u2014 as a way to limit the rise in global temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also says balanced diets\nought to include meat and dairy produce from animals produced in systems which\nare resilient, sustainable and low in greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"is-style-underline wp-block-heading\">Cows under the spotlight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>But while the report offered a\nbalanced appraisal of our current food and farming systems, some sections of\nthe mainstream national media have been quick to point the finger of blame at\nlivestock production once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Plant-based diets can fight\nclimate change,\u2019 screamed the headline from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-49238749\">BBC<\/a>, with the article claiming that the UN\u2019s report\nsays meat and diary consumption in the western world is fueling global warming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[The UN report] said that\nmore people could be fed using less land if individuals cut down on eating\nmeat,\u201d the article goes on. \u201cBut [they] stopped short of explicitly calling on\neveryone to become vegan or vegetarian.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the days that followed, the\nIPCC has been at pains to clarify what the report was really recommending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome dietary choices require\nmore land and water, and cause more emissions of heat-trapping gases than\nothers,\u201d said Debra Roberts, co-chair of the IPCC\u2019s working group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBalanced diets featuring\nplant-based foods such as coarse grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables, and\nanimal-sourced food produced sustainable in low greenhouse gas emission\nsystems, produce major opportunities for adaptation to and limiting climate\nchange.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"is-style-underline wp-block-heading\">Creating sustainable food systems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The key, the IPCC explained,\nis not simply what people eat, it\u2019s what kind of system that food is produced\nin \u2014 and when produced in a sustainable system, meat is a valuable part of our\ndiets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/genus-develop.go-vip.co\/promar-de\/british-agriculture-is-part-of-the-solution-to-the-net-zero-challenge\/\">As we\u2019ve written before<\/a>&nbsp;, from building soil carbon and fertility to increasing species diversity, livestock can have positive effects on the environment, making them an important part of the climate change battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it does come back to how\nmeat and dairy is produced, and farmers do need to continue to make positive\nchanges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can include applying\norganic fertilisers rather than artificial ones to reduce emissions (nitrous\noxide produced by fertiliser used in the livestock sector accounts for about\n18% of GHG emissions), or adopting direct drilling techniques to reduce\ndisturbing soils and releasing carbon stored in them into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And we shouldn\u2019t forget that\nmany farmers have already taken significant and positive steps towards raising\nlivestock\u2019s efficiencies thanks to improved cattle genetics, livestock breeding\nand focusing on feed efficiencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"is-style-underline wp-block-heading\">Overlooking waste<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the most interesting\nelement from the IPCC\u2019s report, however, was the element that got most\noverlooked: food waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About one third of the world\u2019s\nfood is lost or wasted, with causes differing substantially between developed\nand developing countries, as well as between regions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reducing that waste has the\npotential to reduce GHG emissions and improve food security significantly, as\nthe report points out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A large part of the waste\nchallenge is around consumer storage and use of food, but that doesn\u2019t mean\nthere isn\u2019t more that th food supply chain can do to cut wastage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from dietary changes,\nthere are ways to manage risks on farms, such as growing a variety of crops to\nprevent further land degradation and increase resilience to extremes in\nweather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Encouraging all elements of\nthe supply chain to work together to better understand supplies and demands &#8211;\nsomething Promar has done through its work with major retailers and farmers &#8211;\ncan also help with managing food flows, meeting standards, and reducing waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking this wider approach to a\nmore joined-up, intelligent food production and consumption is what is going to\ndrive sustainable systems.
