{"id":1464,"date":"2021-05-01T15:22:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-01T15:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/?p=1464"},"modified":"2021-05-01T15:22:00","modified_gmt":"2021-05-01T15:22:00","slug":"carbon-confusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/it\/carbon-confusion\/","title":{"rendered":"What does it really mean to be sustainable?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>By Anna Clifford<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\"><strong>If you\u2019ve seen any mainstream media stories about livestock production in recent years, it\u2019s likely that you\u2019ve seen the barrage of criticism the industry\u2019s faced for the amount of greenhouse gases cattle produce.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The message has been simple: livestock are a significant barrier in the fight against climate change, and if we want to make a positive difference then we should stop eating meat and dairy products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no doubt that livestock farms and the whole agricultural industry have a role to play in tackling climate volatility. Professor Lee believes CO2e was not meant to be used for these purposes because it doesn\u2019t take into account meat\u2019s nutritional value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s more, it tells us nothing about which farming systems are the most effective at producing food with the lowest emissions pro\ufb01le.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/11\/Promar_Icons_v4-10.png?w=1024&#038;resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-857\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2019\/11\/Promar_Icons_v4-10.png?w=4725 4725w, https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2019\/11\/Promar_Icons_v4-10.png?w=150 150w, https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2019\/11\/Promar_Icons_v4-10.png?w=300 300w, https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2019\/11\/Promar_Icons_v4-10.png?w=768 768w, https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2019\/11\/Promar_Icons_v4-10.png?w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2019\/11\/Promar_Icons_v4-10.png?w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2019\/11\/Promar_Icons_v4-10.png?w=2048 2048w, https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2019\/11\/Promar_Icons_v4-10.png?w=3000 3000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To address the issue, Professor Lee created an alternative way to measure GHGs in meat production by incorporating Recommended Dietary Intakes (RDIs) into the emissions metric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By using RDIs, the metric recognises beef\u2019s high nutritional value and concentration of vital vitamins and minerals, compared to foods which, on the surface, have a lower carbon footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"is-style-underline wp-block-heading\"><strong>Taking nutritional value into account<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In practice, scientists using this metric have revealed that emissions from beef cattle reared on concentrates are actually less than 0.05kg CO2e per 1% RDI. That\u2019s a mere fraction of the 2kg CO2e per 100g calculated in the standard GWP measurement, and 1.5 times lower than beef cattle raised on forage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even more startling, factoring in nutritious value showed that emissions from those same cows were 2.25-times lower than free-range chicken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Danish study con\ufb01rmed that it could be dif\ufb01cult to ful\ufb01l the recommended daily intake of nutrients, in particular calcium, if dairy products are excluded from our diet. In the study, cheese has the highest nutrient density value compared to other food items.
