The NFU\u2019s commitment to helping UK agriculture hit net zero emissions<\/a> ten years faster than the  government\u2019s 2050 goal<\/a> was yet another sign that farmers have to get a handle on understanding and managing their environmental footprint.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given how regularly farming\ncomes under fire for the amount of greenhouse gases it produces, you might\nthink the industry has been given a target it has no chance of reaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But with careful planning and\nmanagement, there are a variety of ways farm businesses can make strides in\nlowering emissions and being part of the net zero economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding the truth behind the data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first step has to be in\nlearning to measure, monitor and interpret what is happening on each farm – but\nhow do we do that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Sustainable Food Trust\u2019s 2019 conference<\/a>, there was lots of discussion about the need for\naccurate metrics if we\u2019re really going to understand and get to grips with\nagriculture\u2019s contribution to UK greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his talk, Professor\nMichael Lee from Bristol University said the complexity of sustainable\nagriculture means there needs to be multiple measurements, as using a single\none will present a skewed view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traditional methods of\nmeasuring the carbon dioxide equivalent (the standard unit for measuring carbon\nfootprints) of a kilogram of beef don\u2019t take into account the nutritional value\nof meat, while measuring carbon footprints tell us noting about which farming\nsystems are the most effective at predicting nutritious food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The solution for Prof Lee has\nbeen to create a new way to measure GHGs in beef production which incorporates\nRecommended Dietary Intakes (RDI) into the emissions metric. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By using RDIs, the metric\nrecognises beef\u2019s high nutritional value and concentration of much-needed\nvitamins and minerals compared to other foods which \u2014 on the surface \u2014 have a\nlower carbon footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Measure, monitor, and react<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another important theme from\nthe conference was the need to measure and monitor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first instance,\nfarmers and land managers should measure emission profiles and set baselines in\norder to establish targets and plan for improvements. Once a baseline\u2019s been set,\nthen it\u2019s vital to continue to take measurements to understand what impact any\nchanges are having, and to assess performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When measurements are being\ntaken, it\u2019s important remember to take into account all areas of the farm. As\nDieter Helm of the National Capital Committee pointed out in his talk, soils\nand woodlands are often data gaps on farms\u2019 balance sheets, and those natural\nassets needed to be valued in financial terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putting all of this into\npractice, the conference\u2019s host farm, Fir Farm, showed how they are measuring\nand monitoring emissions across their 700 acre organic mixed livestock\nenterprise in order to become net carbon neutral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through carbon footprinting,\nestate manager Donald Bennett and his team measures the farm\u2019s total carbon\ndioxide equivalent emissions to be 544 tonnes a year, with emissions coming\nfrom electricity use, manure management, methane from enteric fermentation of\nlivestock, and fuel use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However thanks to woodland\ncreation, implementing a grazing regime which encourages soil biology and soil\norganic carbon, and by investing in renewable energy, 472 tonnes of carbon\ndioxide equivalent are sequestered on the farm annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And with measures to convert\nto organic production, replace oil burners and switch from red diesel to\naltnernative fuels set to reduce those emissions even further, the farm is\nliving proof that reaching the NFU\u2019s targets is possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
