Right now the management of excess rainwater seems to be more troublesome than managing a shortage of water.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Billions\nof litres fall on farm land and yards to soak away or drain into water courses.\nUltimately this is a wasted opportunity,&nbsp;as a significant amount of this\nwater can be captured to bring financial benefit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Producing milk requires a large quantity of water, which has a significant impact on the cost of production.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"787\" height=\"844\" src=\"https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/02\/image-2-e1582645758123.png?w=787&#038;resize=787%2C844\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2020\/02\/image-2-e1582645758123.png?w=787 787w, https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2020\/02\/image-2-e1582645758123.png?w=280 280w, https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2020\/02\/image-2-e1582645758123.png?w=768 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 787px) 100vw, 787px\" \/><figcaption>Average water use for a 200 cow herd.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Most\nwater used on dairy farms is blue water.&nbsp; Blue water is defined as water\ntreated to a standard suitable for human consumption. Blue mains water is the\nmost expensive at around \u00a31.50 per cubic&nbsp;metre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Up\nto a half of all Blue water consumed on a dairy farm is drinking water, with\nthe remainder used for cleaning parlours and yards and for milk cooling and\nplant cleaning.&nbsp; There is enormous potential for on-farm interventions and\ntechnologies to reduce Blue water consumption.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>An important question is to consider if rain or Green water can be captured and turned into highly valuable Blue water.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Doing\nso has the added advantage of reducing the amounts stored as Grey or dirty\nwater in slurry lagoons which also has a disposal cost.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harvesting\nrainwater also&nbsp;increases the security of additional \u2018on-farm\u2019 water\nsupply, an abstraction licences isn\u2019t required and the capital costs of\ngutters, downspouts, and tanks are modest. Clients are often surprised at how\nquickly these investments will pay for themselves.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harvesting\nrainwater is also key for dairy producers who are unable to source water from\nboreholes \u2013 if you can\u2019t drill for groundwater you can still catch it from the\nsky.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\nwork with my clients producing water management plans and programmes which\nhighlights how rainwater can be harvested stored and used on farm.
