Putting your food business in the spotlight might seem daunting, but getting shortlisted, and potentially even winning, an award can be an excellent way of promoting your business, boosting sales and finding new markets.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With\nexperience of being a judge for the Great Taste Awards, and a background\nrunning an award-winning events catering business, Promar Sustainability\nconsultant Caroline Dawson shares her tips on putting together a successful\nentry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why should you enter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Through\nmy own experience as a judge for the Great Taste Awards and in my previous\ncatering career, I\u2019ve seen first-hand the benefits that entering awards can\nhave on a food and drink business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from\nanything else, sitting down and putting an entry together can really help you\ngather your thoughts about what your business have achieved, and where you\nwould like to see it go next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But\nthere are also bigger positives that are worth considering. Awards are trusted\nby retailers and consumers alike, and that trust could open doors to new market\nopportunities, potentially increasing sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Awards\ncan also be an important part of your marketing plan and a cost-effective way\nof gaining attention thanks to positive media coverage and social media, while\nbeing shortlisted can also lead to invites to trade shows, high profile events\nand awards ceremonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choosing the right award<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

First\nthing first, it\u2019s important that you pick an award that suits you and your\nbusiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Search\nonline and you\u2019ll find a wide variety of competitions on offer, ranging from\nthe general, which can cover any food product, to the specialised, such as\ncheese, ale, gluten-free or vegan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\nmight want to consider a specific product award – particularly if you\u2019ve got a\nparticular product you\u2019re incredible proud of and want to shout about. Or if\nyou\u2019re interested in promoting your wider brand, a whole business award might\nbetter suit your goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Awards\nalso vary across different scales, ranging from smaller local or regional\ncompetitions, through to national and international awards. Which one you\nchoose depends on your business and what you hope to gain from entering and\nraising your business\u2019 profile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting your entry right<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So you\nmight be sold on the idea of entering an award, but before you jump into\nwriting those entries it\u2019s worth taking a few moments to plan your next steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many\nawards come with a price tag to enter (and awards ceremonies can be costly too)\nso entering multiple competitions can quickly become expensive. Think about\nwhether there are perhaps one or two wards that you really want to focus on\nthis year, and prioritise which ones you want to enter first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most\ncompetitions have a strict deadline, so make sure you give yourself plenty of\ntime to fill in the application, and if possible get someone else to read it\nover and check it before you send it in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another\nimportant aspect to think about before you fill out an application is\nlogistics: How are you going to transport your product to be judged? Will it go\nthrough the post, via a courier or can you deliver it in person?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\nneed your product to arrive fresh and in the best condition possible, so make\nsure you give plenty of thought to how your package your produce, and include\nany serving or preparation instructions that might be needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preparing to win<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Obviously the goal of entering any award is to get shortlisted and win, but it\u2019s worth thinking about the impact getting nominated for an award could have on your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nexample, if you get shortlisted and interest in your product increases, could\nyou meet demand? And if you need to increase production, can you be sure that\nyou can maintain that award-winning quality?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s\nalso worth thinking about the potential costs that could be associated with\nwinning. For example, if you plan to use the competition\u2019s logo on your\nproduce, does that come at a cost? And have you factored in the costs of buying\nadditional promotional merchandise to promote any awards you do win?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember to have fun<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As with\nanything, there will always be a degree of luck when you enter an award, so\nit\u2019s important not to get too hung up on winning, or too despondent if you\ndon\u2019t get shortlisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most awards\noffer feedback, so it\u2019s a great opportunity to build on the comments received\nand perhaps even consider making tweaks to your products or business operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each\njudge will look for different things and each one will have a different\nopinion, so trying to impress everyone can be a big ask. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
