{"id":3497,"date":"2020-03-30T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-30T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/?p=3497"},"modified":"2020-03-30T06:00:00","modified_gmt":"2020-03-30T06:00:00","slug":"is-blockchain-the-answer-to-the-agri-food-sectors-global-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/it\/is-blockchain-the-answer-to-the-agri-food-sectors-global-challenges\/","title":{"rendered":"Is blockchain the answer to the agri-food sector\u2019s global challenges?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>By John Giles <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">F<strong>rom building resilience and managing market volatility, to increasing productivity, protecting the environment and driving sustainability, agri-food sectors around the world face significant challenges.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding answers to these issues won\u2019t\nnecessarily be simple, but there are tools being developed which could offer\nfresh approaches and new solutions: agri-tech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With an estimated global market opportunity of\n$400bn USD, it\u2019s no surprise that the agri-tech sphere is attracting attention\nfrom players across the supply chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Small innovative start-ups, academic\norganisations and major agri-food multinationals are all taking steps into\nusing technology to streamline the way food is produced and sold. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s not just the traditional players &#8211;\nmultinational tech firms and others outside agriculture and food want to get\ninvolved too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"is-style-underline wp-block-heading\">Finding the right tools<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The list of potential agri-tech technologies is\nalmost endless, but selecting the ones that have deliver the best solutions is\none of the biggest challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One area which has attracted a great deal of\nattention is blockchain. While it was first introduced in 2008 as part of the\ninterest in the bit coin market, its potential for other sectors is so far in\nits infancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However there is growing talk about its\npotential in agriculture and food, and with careful implementation, it could\nrevolutionise the way food is produced, bought and sold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put simply, blockchain is a distributed ledger\ntechnology which connects information from producers to consumers. No\ninformation added to the chain can be tampered with, and everyone can see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reality, however, is a bit more\ncomplicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"is-style-underline wp-block-heading\">Benefits of blockchain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Current attempts to harness blockchain\u2019s uptake\nin the agricultural supply chain has been driven by its benefits to increase\ntrust and traceability, improve food safety and reduce administration time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue of trust between farmers, processors\nand retailers has long been scrutinised, especially over the past five years\nwhen global market prices have been subject to extreme volatility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through smart contracts, blockchain has the\npotential to record and execute real-time agreements between key players across\nthe chain. For many primary producers around the world, where they feel\nprocessors and retailers might not always adhere to contracts, this offers huge\npotential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another potentially important role for\nblockchain comes from the growing consumer interest in where their food comes\nfrom. Through real-time tracking, blockchain offers the chance to increase\ntransparency by following the food\u2019s footsteps from farm to fork &#8211; potentially\nto such levels of detail that it could identify exactly where in a field a crop\nwas grown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"is-style-underline wp-block-heading\">Global potential<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Around the world, there are already some good\nexamples of blockchain in the food supply chain. In China, leading e-commerce\nplatform <a href=\"http:\/\/JD.com\">JD.com<\/a> has implemented blockchain\nacross 700 brands and 50,000 products to increase food safety and reduce\ncounterfeits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile in the US, Cargill\u2019s\ntraceable turkeys allowed consumers to text a code to see the farm their turkey\ncame from, see photos of the farm and read messages from the farmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other firms known to be\ntesting the technology include Tyson, Nestle, Co-Op, Sainsbury\u2019s, Walmart, IBM\nand Carrefour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"is-style-underline wp-block-heading\">Agri-tech adoption<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest stumbling blocks\nto implementing the technology seem to be regulatory uncertainty, and the\npotential failure of different blockchains to work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s needed is for all\nparties involved to see the value of sharing data &#8211; something that hasn\u2019t\nhistorically been a strong point in the agri-food supply chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we can be certain about,\nhowever, is that blockchain is here to stay in the agri-food chain \u2014&nbsp; and early adopters have already laid down the\nmarkers for their potential use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we move towards a very\ndifferent sort of agri-food system in future, we\u2019ll undoubtedly see blockchain\nand other agri-tech drive more global trade, more connected consumers, and a\ngreater than ever emphasis on developing sustainable and traceable supply\nchains.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By John Giles From building resilience and managing market volatility, to increasing productivity, protecting the environment and driving sustainability, agri-food sectors around the world face significant challenges.
