However, that mindset could not be more wrong.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sat between the <strong>3 weeks pre-calving<\/strong> and the <strong>3 weeks post-calving<\/strong>, it is the turning point of the production cycle of the cow as one lactation ends and another begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a critical stage, with it being common knowledge that many infectious and metabolic diseases occur in this period in dairy cattle. In fact, many of the metabolic diseases <strong>only<\/strong> occur in this period. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Ketosis<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/clinical-milk-fever-the-tip-of-the-iceberg-2\/\">Milk fever<\/a>\/hypocalcaemia<\/li><li>Left displaced abomasum<\/li><li>Retained foetal membranes<\/li><li>Metritis and endometritis<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/mobility-scoring-a-simple-step-to-stamp-out-lameness\/\">Lameness<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important that these illnesses can be detected for cow health and welfare, but also <strong>prevented<\/strong>. You just have to look at the costs involved. Not only in terms of treatment, with a case of Milk Fever costing up to <strong>\u00a3302,<\/strong> but also long-term costs due to fertility issues. You\u2019re looking at an average cost of <strong>\u00a3150<\/strong> per cycle that the cow is not in calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"is-style-default wp-block-heading\">So, how can we <strong>prevent<\/strong> these infections and diseases?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It is crucial to get your cows ready for the dry period and then the transition period. Your cows need to be as healthy as possible before the physiological stress of labour, and then milk production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"is-style-default wp-block-heading\">How do we do this? <strong>Environment<\/strong> and <strong>nutrition<\/strong> is key!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The environment we are trying to achieve should promote rest, relaxation and recovery. The key to this is grouping, movement, space and cleanliness. Dry cows who are in the transition period need <strong>16 hours of darkness,<\/strong> versus 8 hours for milking cows. Cows are social creatures, so group dynamics are also very important at this time. Moving cows away from their \u201cfriends\u201d and placing them in smaller groups can be distressing and will encourage greater opportunity for one cow to pick on another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To counteract this, there must be enough space for:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Eating: dry cows need <strong>80cm of feed space<\/strong> which is an increase from milking cows due to their size.<\/li><li>Drinking: they require<strong> 5-7l water\/kg DMI <\/strong>and <strong>10cm linear water space<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Dry cows are significantly more at risk from <a href=\"https:\/\/www-dev.promar-international.com\/why-mastitis-is-costing-you-more-than-you-think-and-what-you-can-do-about-it\/\">mastitis<\/a>, so a clean environment reduces cases. Each case of mastitis costs <strong>\u00a3200<\/strong> (taking into consideration dumped milk due to antibiotic treatment).<\/li><li>They need <strong>2m<sup>2<\/sup> per cow<\/strong> of loafing space (chill-out space).<\/li><li>If there is an increase in <strong>standing<\/strong> for <strong>120 minutes<\/strong> per day during the dry period, this leads to <strong>increased<\/strong> <strong>sole<\/strong> <strong>lesions<\/strong> 12 weeks post-calving.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"is-style-underline wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tackling the transition diet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How would you like to eat somebody\u2019s unwanted leftovers?&nbsp;Your transition cows shouldn\u2019t have to either. Leftovers from the milking group tend to be heating and have been sorted, which will have a significant impact on palatability. This risks a lower dry matter intake (DMI); the DMI target is <strong>12kgDM <\/strong>per cow per day and no more the 120MJ\/kgDM for the dry phase.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A specific dry cow diet is needed with appropriately balanced minerals. If a dry cow has a milking cow ration with <strong>high<\/strong> <strong>calcium<\/strong> this could trigger <strong>milk fever; <\/strong>dry cow diets that contain calcium binders or that are high in straw, maize or wholecrop may also initiate true calcium deficiency (hypo-calcaemia), which also triggers milk fever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transition diets should prioritise the supply of metabolizable protein to the hindgut too; this can either be through the optimal rumen function or the support of bypass protein.
